I recently wrote an article for Ole magazine I was given 300 words in which to get my point about why I think striking is no different from a child throwing their toys out of the pram because they didn’t get their own way. Here is the article:
Here is the text of the article:
It has become more or less impossible for me to indulge in a bit of retail therapy without at some point coming across a screaming child in a right old state bellowing out about the hardships he or she faces from their parents not buying them the latest Action Man or Barbie Doll (you can tell I don’t have kids because if I did you wouldn’t be shaking your head at this point thinking how out of touch I am with what toys kids have tantrums over).
Although a bellowing child isn’t the nicest sound in the world I don’t really mind it. It’s not something that pushes my ‘anger buttons’ which is strange because the adult equivalent absolutely and utterly drives me mad. That is of course the activity of going on strike.
It’s at this point here where I get politically profiled by the reader. Some of you will be nodding your heads at the logical similarities of how a screaming child that is screaming because he hasn’t got his own way and is refusing to stop until he does is in fact very similar to a worker going on strike refusing to continue working until his demands are met. Those of you who aren’t nodding your head may have already profiled me as right wing. But I ask anyone to tell me how it is any different.
The very foundations of any going on strike are unquestionably shaky the vast majority of employees throughout the U.K would find themselves in an HR disciplinary if they attempted to go on strike. It seems that only those who work for large corporations have the right to strike. This for me just proves how invalid the entire strike motion is.
If your job is that terrible that the only resort you think you can resort to is striking then surely you should spend your time in the job centre rather than the picket line.
There are so many analogies of striking that just make the whole concept seem daft. As I think of them in my head the one thing they all have in common is links to childrens behaviour.
You could question my of British industries as people on strike usually use the excuse that they’re protecting the heritage of the company. To me that is a load of tosh. The very reason I don’t support striking is because I am a supporter of British industry. How badly have the recent strikes effected Royal Mail and British Airways?
If you need proof of how damaging strikes are to businesses take a look back to the British car manufacturing industry in the 70 and 80′s and compare it to now. Where has the industry gone? Abroad!
